Home sweet home: create your own mini-museum

Exceptional times call for exceptional measures. Due to the current circumstances, my focus here will temporarily shift from trips and restaurants to stay-at-home tips. Now that all museums are closed, why don't we just bring some art into our homes? Here’s how you create an awesome gallery wall.

1 / Measure the surface

To measure is to know and that quote also applies when creating a gallery wall. Determine where you want to put your mini-museum and measure the area available for it. Decide how many posters you can hang in the available space and take into account the artworks or photos you already have. For a playful effect, it’s best to choose posters in different sizes.

2 / Pick a theme

The options are endless. To narrow down the choices, it’s best to opt for one theme. This can be a certain style or atmosphere or a specific color palette. In any case, always go for two or three main colors and two additional colors, so your gallery forms one beautiful whole. And remember: not only posters belong in a gallery wall. You can also add your own (holiday) photos or drawings into the mix to give your mini-museum a personal twist.

3 / Choose the frames

Frames in different shades and sizes provide a playful effect. For some extra punch you can also add square, round or oval frames to your gallery. Do you prefer to keep it simple and straightforward? Then choose the same frame in different sizes. For an extra sleek look you can even stick to one type of frame in one size. The choice is yours!

4 / Time to puzzle

Before you start drilling, it’s time to puzzle. Place the posters in the frames and arrange them on the floor to find the perfect composition. Try lots of different combinations and think out of the box, that way you’ll get the best and most creative result. While puzzling, take photos of the different options, so you can select the most beautiful composition afterwards. You can also use pieces of paper or cardboard cut into the size of the frames. Just stick them on the wall with wallpaper tape and swap them for the real frames afterwards.

5 / Start with the eye-catcher

When hanging the frames, start with the eye-catcher. As soon as that one’s level, you can add the other frames around it. For a sleek and modern whole, be sure to keep the same distance between the frames. One last tip: get creative. Not every part of your gallery needs to be on the wall. By playing with levels - and for example placing a frame on the floor beneath the gallery wall - you add depth to the room and make the space more interesting.
