Quirky. There’s no better way to describe the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. The eclectic building on the banks of the IJ once offered accommodation for more than 900 emigrants. Today it houses 117 unique rooms that surprise you with swings, pianos and more.

Quick fix: 3 reasons to stay at Lloyd Hotel Amsterdam

1/ If you’re looking for a hotel with rooms for every budget.

2/ If you have a weak spot for (Dutch) design.

3/ If you love staying near Amsterdam’s upcoming North and bustling East neighborhoods.

The Royal Dutch Lloyd

The story of Lloyd Hotel starts in the 1920s, when it is built by shipping company the Royal Dutch Lloyd. The building is located along the banks of the IJ, where ships headed for South America, and first served as a hotel for emigrants. When the Royal Dutch Lloyd went bankrupt in 1935, the building was taken into use by the municipality of Amsterdam, after which it served as a shelter for refugees, a prison and an artist's studio. Wanna know the full story? You can discover the entire history of the building in the stairwell of the hotel.

On the Eastern Docklands

Lloyd Hotel is located on the IJ, in the Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam, with the city center a stone's throw away and upcoming North and bustling East close by. You can rent a bike at the lobby, Amsterdam’s central station is fifteen minutes away and the hotel is easily accessible by car, with lots of parking space in the underground garage.

From one to five stars

The iconic building that houses the Lloyd Hotel is an eclectic mix of architectural styles. It was designed by Evert Breman and has 117 completely unique rooms. As there are rooms available in all shapes and sizes, there’s an option for every budget, from one to five stars. When making a reservation you just choose your room type and the exact room remains a surprise until you check in. Do you prefer to book a specific room? That’s possible! Lloyd Hotel just asks a small surcharge of € 35 for this request and of course this is subject to availability.

Room 221

We stayed at the Lloyd Hotel this November and had the honor of sleeping in room number 221, a.k.a. the classical music room. The room has no less than two (!!) floors and was designed by none other than Dutch designer Joep van Lieshout. Eye catchers are the grand piano, large red spiral staircase and ginormous bed that accommodates up to seven people. The room houses a number of design classics such as the "85 lamps chandelier "by Rody Graumans for Droog, which you can also admire at the MoMa in New York. Room 221 at the Lloyd Hotel definitely deserves a spot on the list of coolest hotel rooms we’ve ever stayed at.

Icon of Dutch Design

The Lloyd Hotel is an icon of Dutch Design, but also simply a wonderful place for a fun getaway in Amsterdam. There is a sunny terrace, you can take the Lloyd Boat to Vuurtoreneiland and the care products are from Marie Stella Maris. Rooms with a shared bathroom start at 50 euros per night, suites at 140 euros per night.
