Tried & Tested: Prado Restaurante Lisboa

A farm-to-table restaurant in the heart of Lisbon? That’s Prado! The restaurant celebrates the best of Portugal, from sea to land, and lives by the motto “if it’s not in season, it’s not on the table.” A gem!

Baixa based

Prado is located on a quiet street in the Baixa district in Lisbon's historic center and within a five minute walk from Sé Cathedral. On one corner you find the Prado Mercearia, a luxury grocery store where you can buy all kinds of Portuguese delicacies. On the other corner: Prado Restaurante, based in a former factory that was in ruins when the owners of Prado found it. As they loved how the plants had taken over the ruins and covered the rusty interiors, they extended this concept while renovating the space. The result? A sophisticated yet casual vibe with lots of hanging plants and a green and rusty color palette. It may be the Hay chairs, but the space even has a Nordic feel to it.

Farm-to-table

The nature-inspired restaurant is named Prado, as that’s Portuguese for “meadow” and plants are also prominently represented in the dishes. Chef Antónia Galapito spent months traveling through Portugal to establish partnerships with farmers, fishermen and winemakers. The chef only works with local, fresh and seasonal ingredients and everything is Portuguese: from the food on your plate, to the napkins on the table. Also, the wine list only contains organic, biodynamic and natural wines.

Sharing is caring

Prado Restaurante works with a food sharing concept in which you order three to four dishes and share them with the table. Highly recommended? The barbell wheat bread with two different spreads and the mushroom ice cream. The latter may sound strange but is an absolute must for all caramel lovers out there.
